Hypnotherapy Myths:
Myth #1: You go to sleep or are completely unconscious.
Hypnosis is a relaxed state. Everyone experiences a light level of hypnosis/trance multiple times of day, for example, right before you fall asleep or wake up each day, daydreaming, getting lost in an experience such as a TV show or movie, work, or creative pursuit.
Some people go “deeper” than others. Some can recall everything that was said during hypnosis, and some feel like they went to sleep and are not able to recall everything. Experiences will vary. Depth of trance does not directly correlate with the success of hypnosis.
Myth #2: You lose control.
In hypnosis, you will not do anything or reveal anything that you do not want to. The conscious mind continues to be present. As a general rule, if a client were to be given a suggestion that he/she does not agree with, they would simply refuse or awake from hypnosis.
Myth #3: You may do things that are against your morals and values.
If any suggestion is not in alignment with your morals or values, it will not be accepted by your subconscious. Hypnosis only strengthens what you intrinsically want to increase in your life. It draws you closer to things to which you already have a strong emotional tie.
Personally, I am of Christian faith. That being said, I seek to respect all religious or spiritual preferences of my clients.
Myth #4: Some people can’t be hypnotized.
Anyone can be hypnotized as long as there is a willingness to do so. As long as you follow the prompts of a skilled hypnotherapist, you will achieve a level of hypnosis.
The success of hypnotherapy is highly correlated with your emotional desire for change, not the depth of trance.
